Qualifications:
The incumbent is a person with extensive investigative experience, preferably with a recognized law enforcement agency. Knowledge of the organizational structure of police departments and a thorough understanding of police work is essential. Also requires knowledge/experience to interpret relevant Federal and Provincial legislation. Knowledge of The Law Enforcement Review Act will be considered an asset. Strong analytical skills are required to determine if police conduct constitutes criminal activity or falls within LERA’s jurisdiction. Must have the ability/experience to make detailed written recommendations and reports based on a thorough investigation and review of established laws, policies and procedures. Requires superior communication and interpersonal skills and experience to interview and communicate with complainants, witnesses, police officers, medical professionals, legal professionals and the judiciary. Mediation skills obtained through training and/or experience are required. Must be able to cope with pressure and stress while meeting multiple deadlines.

Duties:
Receives and investigates public complaints of alleged police misconduct by on duty municipal police officers by: conducting in-depth interviews of complainants, witnesses and police officers; researching and analyzing information to ascertain whether a criminal offence or disciplinary default has been committed; and making recommendations to the Commissioner of the Law Enforcement Review Agency. Also compiles reference documents and detailed reports, and chairs informal resolutions. Some travel is required.
