Veterans Affairs Canada’s Transition Interview Service

Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and the RCMP are working together to introduce a transition interview (TI) for retiring/releasing RCMP members, civilian members and special constables in your area. The TI will assist in identifying issues that can help lead you into a successful transition to civilian life.

The TI was first introduced by VAC in 2003 to releasing Canadian Force (CF) members and their families in order to identify and address gaps in services and support, noted particularly during their time of release. In March 2007, a TI pilot project was successfully introduced to retiring/releasing RCMP members in “F” Division and Depot. The pilot was such a success that it will now be implemented in the Atlantic region in April 2008. The TI service has proven to be a valuable medium for retiring/releasing RCMP members to discuss issues and for VAC to direct them to other access points within VAC and in the community, as required.

The purpose of the TI service is to provide information to the retiring/releasing RCMP member and their family about VAC’s services and benefits, as well as ensures all factors have been considered prior to the member’s transition to civilian life. Factors such as the acquisition of provincial health insurance, housing, health, family functioning, social support, finances, lifestyle and employment are discussed during the TI. The TI service can take place anytime post submission of the 1733 and preferably prior to the member retiring/releasing from the Force.
