VAC Transition Interview Service
Questions and Answers for VAC and RCMP staff
Q1. What is a Transition Interview?
A1. The Transition Interview is a face-to-face meeting between a retiring/releasing RCMP member and a VAC area counsellor. This is an informal chat, lasting about 1-11/2 hrs minutes to discuss things such as health needs or social issues that could impede a successful transition to civilian life.
Q2. Why the RCMP?
A2. The Transition Interview was first introduced by VAC in 2003 to releasing Canadian Force (CF) members and their families in order to identify and address gaps in service and support, noted particularly during time of their release. Given that transition issues were identified as a problem in a needs analysis conducted by the RCMP in 2005, the first TI pilot project was launched to the RCMP in “F” Division and Depot for a six month period. The project proved successful as retiring/releasing RCMP members found the process valuable during their release process as it played a valuable medium for them to discuss issues and to direct them.
RCMP members who have been injured as a result of their service will learn about various services and benefits they may qualify for from VAC. Others will learn about programs available to make their transition to civilian life easier. RCMP have expressed interest in offering a similar process for all releasing members.
Q3. Who will take part in the Transition Interview?
A3. Transition Interviews will be offered to all retired/releasing RCMP members, civilian members and special constables of the RCMP in the Atlantic Region (Divisions “J”, “L”, “B” and “H”)
Q4. Can families participate?
A4. Yes, spouses/common-law partners/dependants will be encouraged to participate.
Q5. What is the start date of this initiative?
A5. The VAC Transition Interview will begin the week of April 1st, 2008.
Q6. Can retiring/releasing RCMP members who are not located in the Atlantic Region access the service?
A6. Retiring/releasing RCMP members who are located in Depot and “F” divisions will continue to access the service as it is only implemented in these areas at the moment.
Q7. Can a member who has already been released from the Atlantic region access the service?
A7. A member who has been released from the Atlantic region in the past two years (maximum 24 months), is able to access the TI service.
Q8. Where will the Transition Interview take place?
A8. The Transition Interview will be scheduled at a mutually convenient place as decided by the VAC Area Counsellor and retired/releasing RCMP member. VAC Area Counsellors travel all over the province and should be able to meet RCMP members in their homes of communities.
