Board of Directors - News and Views

May 2009

From the President:

Since my last President's Corner presentation I experienced a bout of illness which necessitated a lung operation but I am glad to say that the problem seems to have been rectified and I am well under way to recovery.

During my illness the work of your Board of Directors has carried on and considerable progress has been made.  Following many complaints from members that our Constitution and By-Laws needed to be amended to update and modernize following the change to our governance structure passed at our AGM in Winnipeg last year, our Constitution and By-laws have been re-written and are presently being fine tuned for presentation as a resolution at our AGM in Whitehorse.  This work was carried out by Governor Dale Lively and our Governance Committee under Chair John Religa. Input was received from other members of the Board and Divisions through Division Presidents (members of National Council).  I think this document is well written and although it might require some amendments as things change, it will serve us well far into the future.

Work and discussion have been ongoing into various benefit programs for our members such as VIP, pensions piggybacking at age 65, widows’ pensions, life insurance and improvements to Benefit Trust programs.  Progress has been made and we hope that important and beneficial announcements can be made on VIP sometime in the near future as the RCMP and Commissioner Elliott have a very active committee working on it.  Our Executive Director Bill Gidley sits on this committee.

At our recent Board of Directors meeting, a presentation was made by Mr. Bob Slipp, Senior Compensation Analyst, RCMP National Compensation on Bill 201 and pension changes at age 65.  It was clear that this whole program is based on a complicated formula and will require much study before a decision can be made on change.

Our Marketing Committee under Chair Past-President and Governor Rick Morris has reached an agreement with a rental car company for discounts for our members on car rentals and is working on other discounts for us.  No doubt Rick will be circulating the good news to you on our Web-site and otherwise.

Our Whitehorse AGM is getting close and the Board has pretty well finalized plans for it.  I hope to see you all there.

From the Board:

As the Marketing Committee Chair, I have been in pursuit of companies that would be open to offering meaningful discounts on their products for RCMP Veterans. I am having some good luck. These companies will be shown to you at the National Vets web site. The web site address is www.rcmpvetsnational.ca. Currently you will find a discount offered by ‘Nerds on Site”. Needless to say not all of the companies that offer discounts will be everywhere in Canada but we are trying to get the best selection with the widest coverage as possible. Other discounts are on the way with financial benefits to our members. As new discounts become available, they will be put on the national website and you will advised in these newsletters.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM and speaking about old times and new concerns.

Visit the National Web Site for information on pensions, Vet administration, discounts and photos.
