NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S REPORT
2009/2010
It seems like only yesterday that I decided to run for the Presidency of our Association and it is hard to believe that I am about to finish my two year term. A lot of water has run under the bridge during that time, some bad and some good, but we have survived as an Association and I hope that somehow we have improved.
My aim when I took office in Winnipeg in June of 2008 was to increase membership and improve benefits for our members. I think our membership numbers are about the same but our membership committee is working on those. We have made inroads to more and better benefits.
During the past two years we have made major changes in our Governance system and have gone from the old National Executive Committee (NEC) system with ten members and a Board of Directors consisting of NEC and some forty Vice-Presidents (Division Presidents) to a nine member Board of Directors and a National Council made up of all Division Presidents. This new system makes the smaller Board of Directors more workable on a day to day basis and relieves Division Presidents of the burden of liability for Board decisions.
We now have a committee system covering such things as National Operations, Constitutions, Benefits, Marketing, Communications and Membership. This system seems to be working very well. It is relatively new and has needed some fine tuning from time to time but overall is developing nicely.
During the past two years we have concentrated on benefits such as the Veterans Independence Program (VIP) for our members and other former members of the Force who were disabled due to injuries received while on duty. We have also worked on improvements to our Insurance and Pension benefits as well as trying to obtain business partners who will offer discounts to our members. All of these are really works in progress. The VIP project has been submitted to Government by the Force and at the time
of this writing is in their hands.
We have been successful, thanks to our Marketing Committee, in obtaining some discounts for members and only time will tell if our efforts to improve Insurance and Pension benefits have been successful.
As I have stated above my aims for the Association upon taking over this office were to increase membership and improve benefits. They have not changed and I hope the Association will carry on these aims and will continue to prosper in the future.
